ABC Suspends Anchor Over Disparaging Remarks About Tennis Star Alexandra Eala
2/21/20262 min read

Sydney, Australia – During a live broadcast on Australia’s national network ABC, an on‑air presenter was caught on a hot mic making a dismissive comment about rising Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala. The remark, paraphrased as, "She's not really that good. The hype’s just because she’s from the Philippines.”, quickly ignited a firestorm on social media.
Within hours, ABC issued a formal statement:
“The comment made by our presenter does not reflect the values of ABC or our commitment to diversity in sports coverage. We consider the remarks unacceptable and have placed the presenter on suspension pending an internal review.”
The network added that it will conduct a thorough investigation and implement additional safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Why It Matters
Emotional resonance: Alex Eala represents national pride for many Filipinos; any perceived slight against her triggers a reaction derived by strong protective instincts. To give an example of this, when I was in the Philippines during a Manny Pacquiao fight, everything stopped. It was like a 3 hour holiday during which the majority of the nation watched or listened to the fight.
Athletes and cultural representation: The incident underscores the growing visibility of athletes from under‑represented regions and the heightened scrutiny of how they are portrayed in mainstream media.
Journalistic Integrity: ABC’s swift response highlights the importance of aligning on‑air language with corporate values, especially regarding diversity and inclusion, though some felt it was a generic corporate response, essentially damage control, and not heartfelt. Audiences already skeptical of mainstream media may readily have a notion of “big‑network insensitivity.” And, considering what has been exposed the past few years in regards to mainstream media bias, either for political or monetary gain, the skepticism seems justly deserved. Media outlets and content creators alike are reminded to present accurate, respectful, and truthful coverage.
Looking Ahead
The internal review findings have not yet been released, and the duration of the suspension remains unclear. ABC has pledged to update the public once the investigation concludes.
